As a product designer at KiwiCo for 4 years, I worked on a number of product lines. When we launched a new product line for toddlers 0-2 year olds, I led the product design from ideation to production. Each crate is designed around early development and includes a toy as well as supporting educational content to guide the parent. The main challenges for this product line were making sure that the projects were engaging, educational, and passed safety testing standards.
Here is an example of one of my favorite crates I designed
Design Process
Play testing
For each product concept, we hold play testing sessions. By watching the kids play and interact with the activities, and receiving feedback from the parents, we are able to refine the design for the product.
Product Sourcing
Once the concept is tested, I create component dielines and and detailed spec sheets for the vendors. I then work with the sourcing team and vendors to find the appropriate materials.
Product Challenges
Because of safety testing concerns, we had to design the game piece sizes around a larger ball that would pass testing. Since each product ships in a fixed size box, one of the main challenges we faced was designing large game pieces that were sturdy, but also foldable to fit in the existing box.
Once the product is sourced, I worked closely with the editorial team to help create the activity cards and guide photoshoots.
